Elephant Pinwheel Bow Tutorial

We’re Alabama Football fans so when I saw these elephant bows floating around Etsy I just had to make one for my daughter. I’ve never made a hair bow before….ever. This elephant bow was my first one and I promise they are soooo easy!

The tutorial is in two parts. Elephant first then the Pinwheel

Supplies for Elephant bow:

  • 11” & 5” strips of 1.5” Grosgrain ribbon (mine has polka dots on the back because I couldn’t find solid grey)
  • Googly Eyes
  • 3/8” Ribbon & Crystal Bead
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Thread/Needle
  • Lighter (Heat seal all your ends before starting)

1. Fold your 11” piece to where the ends slightly overlap. Place a small amount of glue just so it’s easier to work with.

2-3. Make small folds down the center to scrunch up the bow. Run your threaded needle through it, wrap around, back through the ribbon, etc. Until you feel that it is sufficiently secured.

4. Glue your 5” piece to the back of your bow piece.

5. Flip it over the front side and lightly glue it to the bow there also.

6. Fold in the bottom corners and sides of the trunk gluing them until it is the shape you want.

7. Add the eyes using hot glue

8. Add a small bow using hot glue your 3/8” ribbon and Crystal Bead

I used my bobbin box for a template. It is 5” long but you can use a piece of cardboard or anything that is 5” long.

1-3. Start with one end wrap it all the way around your template then wrap it once more. Your ends should be pointing opposite ways when you’re done.

4. Gently slide it off your template

5-6. Make small folds down the center to scrunch up the bow. Run your threaded needle through it, wrap around, back through the ribbon, etc. Until you feel that it is sufficiently secured.

7. Save a bit of thread to sew your elephant to the pinwheel. Tighten it to pinwheel bow and secure.

8. Attach the barrette to the back using hot glue. To make sure it’s secure run a few passes of thread around barrette and through the bow.

Mistakes happen…..might want to save the small details for last!
